How to deal with no respect shifts?

Submitted by kmt00 on Tue, 02/19/2008 - 8:06am.

Hi there, I'm a barista working at starbucks for 4 months to date. I love the store and most of the co-workers there. However, there's a shift supervisor who always have something against me. He will pick on every details of my actions while working. Like intimidating me for forgetting to ask one customer if he/she wants a whipping cream on their drink. But just one person that I assume base on my intuition, that he wanted it can result in this shift supervisor to be extremely insulting in my work abilities. I do respect my job description, but no body is perfect 24/7 at times. We are not robots. Another time I put an empty milk containers (after sanitizing them) on the above shelf in the refrigerator, he got very pissed and looked in to my eyes will anger and say s boldly that, "Remember that empty containers go on the bottom shelf RIGHT?!" and leave no space for an answer. When I tried to say that I'm sorry, he did not listen and pretend he didn't hear anything. I'm feeling very dis-respected from him when he use harsh verbal everytime a simply mistake happens.

Can anyone with past experiences help me out with this situation? I worked here for some time already and do know my work. But I do not know how powerful a shift is? Is he allow to point out my mistake in any kind of manners he felt? he treated me like I've got nothing and often i can't figure out a good come back.

Please reply ~

I am in a brand new store and I having the same problems. With all my assistant manager/shift leads except one who is very nice. It seems that every mistake I make goes noticed and corrected and everything else I do has criticism. I feel like I am back into barista training again and I dont like it.

you must journal all things he's doing to offend you. but first have a sit down with him
if this shift don't acknowledge your'e feelings. then approach upper management.
in sbux everyones watching each other. Behind your back. trust me ive been around.
speak to him first address his issues. be frank. shifts are not managers at all
just super baristas with keys who can acess to the safe. when they are running a shift
the shift on duty can boss them around like any barista. Document his attitude.

Its hard enough to confront management for complaints of bad treatment by yourself. Thats one reason that employees join labor unions. There is strength in numbers. Contact the IWW Union.

A shift supervisor is allowed and supposed to direct work, have coaching conversations, etc. BUT, they are not supposed to disrespect partners at all. All the training I've ever received has required baristas, shift supervisors, management, etc to treat every partner with "respect and dignity". This shift's behavior is contrary to official company policy. You can absolutely call him on it, and then take the problem to management if he won't listen. If that doesn't work, you can contact the DM, and then corporate. You don't have to take it. Know your rights and exercise them freely. Shifts and managers are not dictators. They perform a job function, but are equal to you. Even my DM told me once that I am allowed to correct managers if they are wrong.

The baristas walked off the job at the Mall of America in bloomington,Minnesota because the company fired a barista. Check out the Starbucks Union and be informed of what is happening at Starbucks and the store closing and thousands of baristas lousing their jobs. Join the IWW Starbucks Union for the future of low paid and disrespected baristas. United you stand and divided you fall. Union Yes!
