Waking up at 4 AM

Submitted by emilyb2k12 on Thu, 07/21/2005 - 9:45am.

I just got hired at a Starbucks. How do you all wake up so early? I'm afraid I'll be tired and it will intefere with my alertness. How long does it usually take to get used to waking up at 4? Did anyone else have a hard time in the beginning?

Of course it's going to be hard adjusting to a new sleeping schedule. If you can't do it, don't open.

If you open regularly then you should adjust pretty well. Try to get your manager to adjust your schedule to best suit your sleeping patterns.

I've worked at Starbucks for two years now and it has been my experience that openers are better off if they open most of the week. If you have a close and then an open or vice versa even in the same week your sleep schedule is going to be way off.

What I do to counterbalance this because my schedule is all over the map (my reward for open availability) is I try to wake up around 6 or 7 in the morning everyday, even on days that I don't have to be to work until 3 in the afternoon. That way when I do have to wake up at 4am for an open it doesn't shock my system.

Thats just what works for me and obviously if Starbucks isn't your only hustle it may not work for you.

Good luck working at Starbucks and keep coming back to this website for any other help you may need. Thats what we're here for.

You could brew some of your caffeinated "partner mark out" pound of coffee that you get every week.

What is difficult is if you close one night, then open the next morning. Certain state laws require that a certain number of hours pass in between shifts; however, I have heard that Starbucks does not always follow the law.

As a last resort, you can ask your doctor about Provigil (generic name modafinil). On the other hand, this drug is rather expensive and is probably not affordable if you work at Starbucks. This drug, which comes from the words "promotes vigilance" is a not a stimulant, but rather is classified as a "wake-promoting agent."

I am nearly positive that it is illegal in every state to have such a short period of time off between a required closing shift, then straight to open.

By law, in every workplace, their should be a designated area for a long list of labor laws and contacts to report the violations.

Of course, if your manager is reasonalbe then you should be able to simply point out the fault and something will be done to accomodate. Unfortunately if this is not the case, there are 800 numbers posted around where you can call and report violations. If you need the number for reporting the violation, I can probably obtain it for you.

I open every weekday morning and find these tips may help:
A) Vitamin C. It's natural energy... that Tropicana commercial is right... caffeine doesn't give you THAT much energy... so try drinking OJ or taking a Vit C supplement pill every morning. I take a 250mg (more than enough) pill every day.
B) Hello? Get to bed early the night before. I go to bed by 11 (at the latest)
C) The VCR is a great invention. Tape your favorite shows and go to bed instead... it'll be your reward the next day when you come home from your shift to watch them and SKIP COMMERCIALS.
D) Just be an overall healthy person and you'll zoom right through the early shift. Duh, don't smoke, don't drink, be active, be healthy.
E) Shower in the morning... it'll help you wake up.

Also: "Close-opens" are not a good thing on a regular basis. But on occassions, you gotta do one. But if your manager keeps scheduling that as a regular thing: then that's a problem.

That's all for now.
