expected time Sbux workers have to arrive for early morning shifts

Submitted by dumpstermcnuggets on Sun, 10/02/2005 - 3:59pm.

how early does Starbucks expect workers to arrive for an early morning shift before a store opens? it seems like they usually expect workers to arrive like 45min-1hr before a store opens, but i just would like to know what their official policy is. i'm still semi-interested in applying for one soon at some point, that's all. thanks

Do they get paid for that time or is that time donated to Starbucks.

No employer can require your time and not compensate you for it. Our government has laws against that.

damn. thats early. we have to be at our store by 5:30 on the weekend, 6:30 on the weekdays.

i use to have to commute to work 2 hours from where i was living (a girlfriend drug me out to the boons for one reason or another). so i would get up at 3 in the morning to open by 5:30. that was such a pain in the ass.

thank god im back in the city.

Our store has 45 min to open. That 45 includes the 10 min early open policy that we have.

Here is just one of the ways that Starbucks management doesn't use their heads. The closers get 30 min to close. That includes the 10 extra min past closing that is part of policy. There is always grief if we go over our 30 min allocated. We have the same number of closers as openers. Have you seen the closing duties? By the time we close, clean(every damn thing in the store), stock, get the COW, wrap the pastry, ....etc.....etc. The openers brew coffee, put out pastry and wait for the fun to happen. Opening doesn't even have a Frappy hour. You would think that Starbucks would take a look at how they schedule the day.

It depends: My store is a small store that has just one pasteries case and no patio, it is 30 min before the opening time, some other store are bigger and w/ patio, so they need 45 min be4 opening....
Closing duties take longer time in my store, so we are 3 people to close for 45 min..

The time you have to be there before opening varies from store to store and within each store how many people available to work there. If anyone thinks they aren't being given enough time to do either opening or closing, then something is breaking down with the people working these shifts. Mornings are much busier than nights, which is why they don't have to do as much before opening but have more to during business hours. In my store we do close to 75% of our business for the day before noon. Closers have it easier with the customer load but have more to do with cleaning and prep work. It balances out either way.

And what's with people not getting out in 30 minutes? Don't you people pre-close? Trust me, I know both worlds...opening and closing. I sometimes have to make my people stay longer so we can get Duty Roster things done. Normally I can shut the place down around 10:25 no matter what day it is. Recently, in light of current circumstances, I've been making my people stay later to knock out some extra cleaning duties, but we still make it out on time.

Anyways, I am ranting now. Please forgive me.

Yes, Starbucks asks that people show up 30-45 minutes before the store opens to make sure the store is set up with all possible products available for sale from the first minute of business to the last. Is that early? Damn early indeed. I have to get up at 4:30AM when I have to open. Fun stuff!
