Katrina and the Disappearing Starbucks

Submitted by southbux on Sun, 10/23/2005 - 6:39pm.

Starbucks Coffee needs to reopen its undamaged outlets in New Orleans as soon as possible. McDonalds, Wendys, Burger King, Dominos Pizza, Royal Blend, Rue de la Course are starting to reopen and CC's won't be far behind. (CCs, Royal Blend, and Rue de la Course are all small coffee chains in New Orleans for those of you who don't know)

Not only are these chains reopening and contributing positively to the rebuilding of our city by putting people back to work and providing jobs to those who are now unemployed because of Katrina but all of these chains are offering incentives for people to come back to work.

You'd probably think I was crazy if I told you Burger King is offering a $5000 sign on bonus to all new hires in New Orleans. Well they're doing it. As I'm going around talking to people I'm finding out that large and small businesses are offering all sorts of incentives for people to come work for them. While these incentives are benefitial to both the companies (so they can open back up quicker) and the worker, (get a little extra change) its New Orleans as whole that is going to benefit the most.

So you want to know where Starbucks fits into this picture? My complaint is their disappearance from the picture entirely. The projected open dates for Starbucks in New Orleans are well, shaky at best and in my perception non-existant. Partner resourses is confused at best and completely lost in my perception. It has been my experience over the past 7 or 8 weeks that no one really knows whats going on. I'm sad to say that FEMA and Starbucks had too much in common when it came to dealing with hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

Whats truly upsetting though is how McDonalds and Burger King were here doing business and helping to rebuild the New Orleans economy before Starbucks. Its almost as if we have to wait for New Orleans to reach its critical mass of yuppies before reopening is considered.

Maybe I'm not being fair to Starbucks but until I get a response as to why reopening has not occured that is not vague and ambiguous or simply I don't know then I will maintain my position that Starbucks needs to reopen now and they should offer incentives for people who decided to come home after the city we live in damn near got destroyed.

Help the people who came home Starbucks, whether they were partners or not, stop waiting and hiding in the suburbs until the rich folks come back.

All of the coffee chains in New Orleans now have at least one outlet up and running except for Starbucks. Some of these tiny chains and independents have been up and running for weeks.

So my question to Starbucks is simply where are you with your infinite resources?

Starbucks specifically cited higher labor costs as the culprit for its soft margin guidance. Reversion in profit margins will be sharp and swift as the economy downshifts to slower growth. Starbucks , for instance, has returned to only two of its four standalone locations in New Orleans, and Popeye's to 16 of its 36.
