Starbucks Union

IWW Starbucks Workers Union

Anti-union???

Submitted by texas_java_cowboy on Tue, 11/29/2005 - 9:01am.

I just wonder HOW Starbucks can continue to be a major donor to Democratic candidates and liberal causes AND be against an organized workforce? Write your Democratic office holders and ask them to ask Starbucks Corporate leadership why this is so.

If you like the idea of an 8-hour workday, thank a union.

If you have workman's comp insurance, thank a union.

If you've ever drawn unemployment insurance from being out of a job, thank a union.

If you have paid sick leave, paid vacation, and paid holidays, thank a union.

When you see an OSHA sticker in your workplace, thank a union.

These are among the many benefits organized labor has fought for and won for workers in the United States. If you work for Starbucks and have not signed up to help organize and be part of the union, ask yourself why? Why does the company give with one hand to Democrats, then take back by opposing worker rights?

As far as my family and I are concerned, I've spent my last dime at ANY Starbucks location until they decide to allow workers to organize!

Keep up the fight and never back down!

In Solidarity,

More complaining from the children of "THE" privileged first world nation. Spoiled, lazy and relentless in their complaints about one of the easiest jobs available. Being a Barista is so easy! Try wheat farming or picking strawberries-as fast as you possibly can, all day. Oh! that's right, We privileged first-world Americans leave those jobs to migrant farm workers. (God forbid you should choose to resist buying the .79c/lb broccoli because you know the human suffering that the produce company/grocer exacted to bring that price to you)
All I keep reading on this site is UNENLIGHTENED SELF INTEREST! and whining for MIDDLE-CLASS ENTITLEMENTS while more than 40,000 children die daily of PREVENTABLE causes.

what point are you trying to make. over and over you say the same comments. should we except our jobs as they are or should we challenge the corporate world order?

organizing a union and addressing our conerns is the first step in building a world wide movement for economic justice. we need to build solidarity with the farm workers and with the third world. should we let starbucks do that for us or do we as workers take it upon ourselves to organize, empower ourselves and workers around the world.

come to union square and talk to suley, to talk to Ivan, talk to Tomer, talk to Mike and other members of the union and you will not see the "middle class" you will see the working poor.

Because they're smart. Just because they're all liberals, doesn't mean they have to have ALL the views. Unions do their part in some companies, but in Starbucks its just for the lazy and undermotivated. I know at my store, everyone I've talked to is against it, and only wants to come here to laugh. Starbucks doesn't treat us poorly, people just think that they're more important than they are.

This is something that used to confuse the hell out of me when I worked at Whole Foods. All the anti-union liberals running around. Then I went to work at Starbucks as it finally clicked with me that liberal doesn't equal pro-labor.

As someone who used to be heavily involved in an AFL-CIO union and their politics I can tell you the relationship between labor and politics is a waste of time for labor. Politicians take our money and our votes then leave us hanging over and over again.
I'm a registered voter here in Louisiana but I when I vote I'm going to vote on issues like stronger levees and better schools.

But when it comes to labor issues I prefer to take matters into my own hands and encourage my fellow workers to do so. Labor is involved in a class struggle not a battle between Republicans and Democrats. Both political parties have exploiters in their ranks but they also have exploitees within them. So in order for labor to be effective for its own purposes and self interest it needs to take hold of its own destiny and fight its own fights.

Open up your eyes...you don't actually believe the upper higher crust of Starbucks DOES NOT get sick pay??, or ONLY gets a 10 minute break for working 6+ hours (OR EVEN BETTER, sometimes NO break at all)?? You don't think the folks in the corporate sector of Starbucks call around frantically at ALL hours of the night trying to get their shifts covered or work in conditions of extreme noise, in cluttered, unorganized, inadequately supplied, filthy offices with equipment continually on the fritz because some manager was too lazy to deal with fixing it?? You don't actually believe when corporate Starbuck workers do their desk job work that they have to go on a wild hunt to try to locate ONE darn SHARPIE pen?? Again, you don't actually believe corporate Starbuck upper crust workers have to call around to make sure they get enough hours so that A.) they can meet hour requirements for insurance and B.) so that they can remotely pay thier living expenses? And I'm sure you can't be so naive' to believe that they get sent home early (UNPAID, I might add) because business is alittle slower than the regular neurotic pace?? You can't actually believe that the higher ups are working as short handed as the retail sector of the company is on an eternal basis?? MY POINT IS: As the retail sector works thir butts off under poor conditions to SAVE money, the CORPORATE FAT CATS are working in acceptable / luxoriuos (?) conditions; only getting FATTER at the little guy's expense. So then, why not spread a little of that green $$ cheer down on to the hard working front line folks at Starbucks? Why are we any less than them? It would be different if ALL departments of the company were relatively paid the same and working in the same conditions to be conservative...but this is just pure exploitive corporate GREED. But, you being a shift "and all", I mean I'm sure that you couldn't possible be all THAT naive and believe these statements to be any different...like that the upper management of Starbucks is making it off the smaller guys in the company. If you could locate this website on-line, I would like to think that you might be a little smarter than the rest of the blinded company robots in supervisory positions. It's okay to "come out from under your rock"...ya' know there is life after believing in Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy and Easter Bunny.
